Early mornings don’t excite me unless traveling. Those super cheerful morning folks that greet you good morning in high octaves? Yeah, they can be a bit much.

No, I was never the morning person. But guess what?

I’m diving into the 5 AM Club Challenge. Crazy, right?

The idea behind the 5 AM club challenge came from a post-activity of a skills workshop I attended two days ago. The goal of this challenge is to practice the discipline you need to achieve your big, hairy goals.

If you’re riding the “I just learned something new” wave, you’re invited to ride along with me in this 5 AM club deal.

The Mechanics

For the next 66 days, these are the steps you must do in the 5 AM Club challenge.

Step 1: Wake up at 5 AM

Don’t press snooze on your alarm. Wake the f*** up.

Go to your accountability group. Yes, this activity is more fun when done with a group. The path to success does not have to be lonely.

Next, show up. You could send a ‘good morning’ message over a group chat or join an online meeting room. You don’t need to show your grumpy faces on cam — just show up.

Step 2: Post a motivational quote on your social media account

Practice accountability in public. Don’t be ashamed to show that you’re a work in progress. Pave the way and inspire others.

Do this by posting your picture with a motivational quote on it. These could be quotes from your favorite authors, celebrities, or influencers. In my case, I just find snippets in my daily articles from my 100-day writing challenge.

Here are my entries for Day 1 and Day 2:

Lastly, place the #5AMClub hashtag on your post. You can choose to add more if you want.

Step 3: List five things you’re grateful for today

It could be a gratitude notebook, in your journal, or in your notes app. I don’t care where you write it. Just write five things you’re grateful for today.

After practicing gratitude walks for two months now, I’ve realized that there are heavy days when it’s just hard to say thanks.

That’s okay. When I face these heavy days, I don’t force myself. Instead, I simply say, “teach me to be more grateful.”

Step 4: Recite your manifestations

I want you to be your best hype man. Envision your goals and convince yourself that you can achieve them.

If you don’t know how to start, I suggest the ‘Optimist Creed’. I picked on this when I read Tony Robbins’ Awaken The Giant Within. I used to read this aloud to remind myself to act according to my version of Code of Conduct.

Take one step ahead and start acting like you’re living those dreams now.

Step 5: Greet anyone you pass by

This step will depend on what skill you’re learning.

In my case, the skill requires me to interact with people. So, the easiest action to practice this is to greet anyone that passes me by with a quick ‘hi’, nod, or smile. Any action that will acknowledge their presence.

This step should be slightly uncomfortable but easy to do. This will encourage you to start taking baby steps and practice your mind that doing this step is safe to do.

Step 6: Exercise or Intermittent Fasting

After nourishing your mind and soul, nourish your body.

My fitness journey has had a lot of ups and downs. But I can attest to the benefits of fasting and exercise. I saw an improvement in my blood tests, my focus, and in my physique.

At the same time, I saw how hard it was to sustain fasting in my lifestyle. It’s important to find the best strategy that works for you in the long run. You can try 16-hour intermittent fasting to start (skip your breakfast). Listen to your body and then adjust accordingly.
